HEAT WAVES
Definition:
A period of prolonged abnormally high temperatures relative to those normally expected.
o Very serious and dangerous
Problem
Prolonged exposure to excessive heat can damage crops, injure or kill livestock, and increase the risk of wildfires.
Data
During the 1960s, the average heat wave across 50 cities was 2.0°F above the local 85th percentile threshold. During the 2010s, the average heat wave has been 2.5°F above the local threshold.
Causes:
High pressure in the atmosphere moves in and pushes warm air toward the ground. The high pressure is a result of air sinking through the atmosphere. As the air descends, the pressure increases, compressing the air and heating it up.
o The sinking air acts like a cap. It traps warm ground air in place.
Global Warming More heat waves
Climate change is making heat waves longer, more extreme, and more frequent.
Leading cause of weather- related deaths
o Kills more than 600 people a year
o can make existing health problems worse and can cause heat stroke or heat exhaustion even in healthy people.
- Extreme heat can make some mental health conditions worse.
Reduce Health Toll
Cities can offer community cooling centers, warn the public when a heat wave is coming, and improve infrastructure to avoid power outages and ensure access to water.
