Migration in Response to the Environment and the Effects of Fossil Fuels
In recent years the state of the earth has begun to decline rapidly. Because of the climate crisis many individuals are forced to leave their homes. Migration patterns have shown that more and more people are moving to environmental conscious states. Many are in search of sustainability as well as a durable economy. “Environmental migrants are persons or groups of persons who, predominantly for reasons of sudden or progressive change in the environment that adversely affects their lives or living conditions, are obliged to leave their habitual homes, or choose to do so, either temporarily or permanently, and who move either within their country or abroad” A possible surge in awareness about the environment could lead to more environmental migrants and a cleaner future.
There are many factors that determine the state of the environment and climate. To determine how maintainable and eco-friendly a place is, researchers looked into how each state deals with these factors. The reliance of fossil fuels is one of the largest factors and has posed a major problem for the environment. Fossil fuel corporations haven’t decreased in funding and continue to make profit, as many economies rely on the jobs it provides. This reliance on oil and coal for energy is one of the most effective ways of harming the environment. It is the leading factor in greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the USA’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, 24 states have formed the U.S. Climate Alliance to hold themselves to the responsibility of reducing greenhouse gas emission 28% below 2005 levels by 2025. Air pollution is one of the most health-damaging factors today. According to the United Press International, nearly 150 million American citizens (about half of the population) are exposed to polluted air regularly. While other damage to the environment can take generations to accumulate, air pollution puts everyone’s health at risk immediately. Because air pollution and greenhouse gases are often from the same sources, cutting these emissions would reduce air pollutants. Overall fossil fuels are a huge detriment to the environment and if we continue to rely on this resource the state of the environment will gradually get worse. It is up to those in power to speak up on behalf of those in search of a cleaner future for the planet.
