Wind Energy
Wind Powered Energy
Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing energy sources in the world, but there are a few challenges to overcome. One of the challenges is that wind plants can impact the local wildlife. Many birds and bats have been killed by flying into a spinning turbine blade. However, there is research going on to reduce the impact of wind turbines on these animals, although the Wind Energy Technologies Office has stated that, “Like all energy sources, wind projects can alter the habitat on which they are built, which may alter the suitability of that habitat for certain species.” Another challenge is that good land for building wind turbines is usually in remote areas far away from cities where the electricity is needed. Transmission lines would need to be built to get the electricity into the cities. This problem could be fixed with a few already built transmission lines for the electricity to run through.
While Wind Energy has its challenges to overcome, the advantages far outweigh the challenges. One of the many advantages is that wind energy creates jobs. The U.S wind sector employs more than 100,000 workers and being a wind turbine technician is becoming one of the fastest growing jobs in America. Wind Visions Report has claimed “wind has the potential to support more than 600,000 jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and supporting services by 2050.” Wind Energy is also sustainable. As long as the sun shines and the wind blow, the energy is able to be harnessed and sent to cities and towns in need of electricity. Another advantage is that Wind Energy is also a clean fuel source which means that it doesn’t pollute the air like power plants. These power plants rely on combustion of fossil fuels and can cause major health problems. Since Wind Turbines don’t produce atmospheric emissions that cause acid rain or greenhouse gases, the climate will start to improve.
Even though wind energy has its challenges, the good far outweighs the bad. Wind energy is also much better than the alternative ways to get energy because of less toxic emissions into the environment and it is much more cost effective.
